Virtual box is the software that helps to install (virtualization) multiple operating systems in your computer without modifying your current operating system. At first it was developed by innotek GmbH, then Sun Microsystems purchased it, at present it is under Oracle Corporation. 

Suppose that you are running on windows, wants to check how linux OS works or wants to do some work on linux, but you are very novice in linux. At this moment your best option is to use Virtual box. Using virtual you can get familiar with different operating systems. Virtual Box runs on Windows, Linux, Mac, Solaris , and Open Solaris etc.
